Bikes on the Bus

Bus racks are provided on all bus routes, and Route 123 Strait Shot buses are equipped with underfloor storage for bicycles.

The front bike rack can hold 2 - 3 bikes. Outside bike racks and any interior space is limited and on a first come, first serve basis. Interior space is determined at the discretion of the bus operator. We recommend carrying a bike lock with you in the event you need to lock up your bike at the bus stop.

ADA passengers have priority seating. If your bike is inside of the bus and an ADA passenger is asking to be transported at a bus stop, you may be asked to remove your bike from the inside of the bus.

Please have detachable bags, bottles, pumps, trailers, and any other items attached to your bicycle removed before the bus arrives for quick loading.

Learn more about rules, loading, and unloading in the Bike Brochure or below.

  • Rules

    1. Bike rikes are available on first come, first serve basis. Foot passengers and passengers with ADA mobility devices have priority seating at all times during trips. Be prepared to secure your bike near the bus stop if space is not available.
    2. Bikes may be loaded/unloaded at any bus stop.
    3. You must be physically able to load/unload your own bike. Drivers can give verbal instructions but cannot assist with loading or unloading bicycles.
    4. Conventional bikes that do no securely fit on the bike rack due to size, style, shape, or design, cannot be transported inside the bus. Bikes over 55 pounds are not allowed.
    5. Electric powered bikes are allowed, provided they can be placed securely on the bike rack, or inside if space is available.
    6. Tandem and combustible fuel powered bikes are not allowed.
  • Loading Your Bicycle

See the Bike Brochure for more details.

    1. Before loading your bicycle onto the rack, all items that may interfere with mounting or could fall off during the trip need to be removed (bags, pumps, bottles, etc.). Ensure that items (child carriers, etc.) do not block the driver's vision.
    2. As the bus nears the stop, have your bike ready for loading. When the bus stops, inform the driver you are using the bike rack and quickly load your bicycle. Allow passengers deboarding to remove their bicycles first.
    3. For your safety, always load your bicycle from the curb or directly in front of the bus. Never load a bike from the traffic side.
    4. With one hand, grip the rack latch release (in the center of the rack) to lower the rack from raise position. Lift the bike onto the forward most spot, placing the front tire into the wheel well of the rack. Swing the support arm over the front tire and release the tension to secure the bike to the rack. (Some racks have arms with buttons that must be pushed down to releasse the arm.)
    5. Board the bus and keep an eye on your bicycle during the duration of the trip.
  • Unloading Your Bicycle

    1. When approaching the stop, inform the driver you will be unloading a bicycle. For your safety, exit from the fron door of the bus, unless the driver instructs you  otherwise.
    2. To remove the bike, reverse step 4 in the loading instructions.
    3. If the rack is empty, please secure the rack back into the raised position.
    4. Move quickly away from the bus to the sidewalk or shoulder and let the driver know it is safe for the bus to leave.
